Past Perfect

Use Past Perfect for an action that happened before another action or time in the past: When I arrived, the film had already started.

Past Perfect (had + V3) shows the earlier of two past actions — the one that happened first. It is often used with Past Simple to make the time sequence clear: She had finished dinner before her guests arrived. Common signal words are before, after, by the time, already, just, and never. Form: subject + had + past participle. Negative: had not (hadn't) + V3. Question: Had + subject + V3?

✗ When I arrived, the film already started.
✓ When I arrived, the film had already started.
The earlier action needs Past Perfect: had started.
✗ She had went to the shop before lunch.
✓ She had gone to the shop before lunch.
Past Perfect needs the past participle: gone, not went.
✗ I hadn't never seen snow before.
✓ I had never seen snow before.
Don't use a double negative: hadn't and never together is wrong.

Past Simple vs Past Perfect

Past Simple tells a simple past action. Past Perfect is used for the action that happened even earlier, before another past action.

She left the party. (simple past event)

She had left the party before midnight. (earlier event, clear order)

I ate breakfast.

I had already eaten breakfast when he called.
