Advanced Articles & Zero Article
01 · Quick explanation
Use the with unique things, rivers, seas and plural country names: the sun, the Nile, the Netherlands. Use zero article with general plurals, uncountables, meals, most country names, and institutions used for their purpose: Dogs are loyal. I have breakfast at eight. He is in prison.
02 · Full explanation
The is used with things that are unique in the world or context (the sun, the moon, the internet, the government), with names of rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges, and groups of islands (the Thames, the Pacific, the Alps, the Bahamas), and with plural or 'republic/kingdom' country names (the United States, the Philippines, the United Kingdom). Zero article (no article) is used with general plural or uncountable nouns speaking generally (Books are expensive; Love is important), with names of meals (We had lunch late), with most singular country, city and street names (France, Tokyo, Baker Street), and with institutional nouns like school, prison, hospital, church, bed, work when used for their normal purpose rather than as a specific building: He is at school (studying) vs He is at the school (physically there, e.g. to pick someone up).
